November Helix Athlete of the Month

Welcome to the new Helix Triathlon Athlete of the Month

Each month we'll highlight a Helix Triathlon member who has shown dedication and persistence on their triathlon journey to achieve their goals.

The first Helix Triathlon member to kick things off is...

Congratulations to the November Helix Athlete of the Month – Ian de Kretser!

Ian first joined Helix way back in 2016, but stepped up his commitment in 2020 coming on with some big goals to chase!

Like many triathletes, Ian started his journey with a sprint race at Bribie Island in 2014 as a practice event for the Mooloolaba Olympic distance triathlon later that year.

Since then, Ian has completed a further 5 Olympic distance triathlons, a teams event at Noosa and recently finished his first half ironman race at Sunny Coast 70.3

Ian said that whilst his goal was to complete the race in under 6 hours, he wasn’t sure if he would actually get there.

“In the back of my mind I didn’t think I would get there as I had only just broken 3hrs for an Olympic distance earlier this year.

“However all the training and coaching from Dave paid off and I completed it in 5hrs 54mins, which I was ecstatic with”.

Ian credits his performance and improvement to working with Helix Head Coach Dave Tabernacle

Coach Dave said Ian deserved the result after all of the hard work he put in.

“As a coach there’s nothing better than watching an athlete develop to reach their potential when it’s a true partnership together.

“Ian has come a long way since he first started and particularly in recent months on our athlete specific coached program.

“He continues to put in the work and I have no doubt that he’ll be ready for an outstanding personal performance at Busso in a few weeks time”.

Ian says the best thing about being a Helix member is the community.

“I’ve found everyone to be very friendly and supportive at Helix.

“It’s a very welcoming and fun culture which is important to me.

“It’s also clear to see how dedicated the coaches are in working with athletes to help them achieve their goals”.

Make sure you get around Ian and the other Helix athletes as they head over to WA for Ironman Busselton on Sunday December 5th. We can’t wait to see all that hard work pay off on race day!
